Chizu finally comes to terms with what needs to be done and Nina says her farewells while trying to hold back tears, the scene ends with the duo taking Nina’s body back to the service. Isla, meanwhile, is talking to Nina, who reveals that she knows that she will soon start to degrade (which appears to be a Giftia’s version of death) but wishes to leave before she becomes a hassle to anyone, not wanting her grandmother to go through to the pain of watching her fade away. Tsukasa confronts Chizu and offers various deals on how to make the best of a new Giftia but is promptly scolded and made very aware of the fact that even though to him it might seem like he’s replacing a broken down machine, to Chizu, she would not only be losing a granddaughter, but the only family she has ever had. So, after watching another duo retrieve a Giftia with little difficulty, Tsukasa and Isla take on a case wherein an elderly woman named Chizu is refusing to let go of her Child-Type Giftia “Nina”. ![]() Isla attempting to break the ice with some Castella Honey Tea ⇒SPOILER ALERT⇐ The next two paragraphs under this photo go into detail about the end scene of the episode, so if you don’t want to have it spoilt for you, watch the episode before reading any further (or simply cover the paragraphs with your hand and advance to the Pros/Cons). After being filled in on how the Giftia will eventually degrade and why they need to be collected, he is paired with his very own Gifta partner “Isla” and is sent out into the field, only to discover that the retrieval process is a lot harder than he first thought. Tsukasa is a recent college graduate and arrives for his first day at work having absolutely no clue what the service does or what his role in the department will be. It is here in the Terminal Service that we meet our protagonist, Tsukasa Mizugaki. Giftia have the same capacity for memory and emotion as any normal human being, but have a lifespan of only 81,920 hours (which equates to about nine years and four months) and when the Giftia’s time is up, it is the job of the “Terminal Service” to go and retrieve it before their emotions and memories start to break down. Our story begins in the near future, where robotics technology has advanced to the point where androids (known simply as Giftia) now have the ability to perfectly express human emotion. “if my lifespan…was predetermined…I wonder how I would handle that?” Anyway, enough with this rambling, Review Time! Time for the 2nd Anime Review! The subject of this review is a shiny spring 2015 anime named Plastic Memories which, even though I’m only on episode 1 at the time of writing this, has already given way to some intrigue, some drama and some powerful feels.
